This Year's Beneficiary

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah seeks to engage, connect and support the children in our state who benefit most from a stable relationship with an adult mentor by providing volunteers for children in Utah.

• We engage children by reaching out to partners in communities who help us identify children, ages 6-18, who want and need a mentor. In 2017 91% of the children we served were from low-to-moderate income families and 68% were people of color.

• We strive to connect these children with the perfect match – a mentor with similar interests who wants to help just that kind of child. We were able to make 104 new matches in 2017, bringing the total number of children served for the year to 1,322.

• Once the match is made, we support the matches through consistent communication with children, mentors, and parents. This support is a crucial factor in the strength and longevity of the mentoring relationships. 71% of our active matches were together for at least 12 months in 2017. Research shows that goodness of fit and the longevity of the mentoring relationship yield the best results for children in the areas of social acceptance, scholastic competence, avoiding risky behaviors and trust in a parental figure.

To assess the outcomes from our mentoring programs we survey children before they are matched with a mentor and compare that to a follow-up survey each year thereafter. On average our community-based matches last 27 months and our school-based matches last 16 months. In 2017, 95% of children matched with a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor for at least a year show improvement in at least four of seven areas when looking at specific aspects of educational performance, personal behavior, and emotional well- being.
